Disability creates poverty. How?

by Jacinthe Collin, Financial Security Advisor

You have disability coverage! That’s great! Is your coverage appropriate for your situation?

We’ve all heard horror stories.  When a disability occurs, either the person has no coverage in the event of an accident or illness, or worse, they have purchased coverage for which they pay an insurance premium and the insurer refuses to pay.

Why do you think that is?

You might say that insurers write in fine print so they don’t have to pay.  That they’re looking for a loophole to avoid payment, or something. But what if I told you that the first and foremost reason why disability claims are denied by insurers is that the disability insurance coverage purchased does not take into account the nature of the disabled person’s work?

When you applied for disability insurance, did you describe all the tasks you perform in your job?  Did you specify the number of hours spent on each of them?  Did you say where you work and under what conditions?  Did you mention the equipment you use on a daily basis?  All of these factors are of paramount importance when purchasing disability coverage and even more so when making a claim.

Type of protection

There are several types of protection in disability insurance, all of which meet specific needs. All we need is the one that best suits our needs. Insurance companies pay out millions of dollars annually.   We never talk about that.  There’s plenty of stories to tell, coming in the next post.

Complexity

Reading a contract, whatever its nature, is a chore for most of us.  A financial security advisor is in the best position to demystify this complex language.  Give an advisor a chance to simplify it for you.

No one wants to jeopardize their personal, family and professional life. Everybody wants to keep their dignity.  Does your disability insurance policy allow for this?
